State House History
1753
The first State House was built in Charleston.
1790
The second State House was built in Columbia, South Carolina, where the legislature held its first meeting.
1865
The State House was destroyed by fire during the Civil War by General William T. Sherman on February 17.
1903
The third State House was finished after nearly 50 years of construction and was built to be fireproof by design.
1998
The State House completed renovations to make the building safer, more accessible for people with disabilities, and better protected against earthquakes.
